Dreams (Night Visions)

Who dreams?

·        We dream 3 significant dreams per night.

·        We spend 3 years of our lives dreaming, more than we spend eating.

Why do we dream?

·        To release events of the day

·        To file away important matters of the day for future reference

Why don’t we remember our dreams?

·        Don’t value them, don’t think they are important

·        Medication interfers

·        Alarm clock startles us out of sleep, rush off to begin our day before we have time to remember

What is a dream?

·        A gift, a piece of information, a question, a riddle

·        A "night vision" ( Dan. 2:19) – “dark sayings” (Numbers 12:8)

·        An unopened letter from God written in the language of our heart

·        An opportunity to enter into a spiritual dialogue with ourselves and God

·        An invitation to examine our lives for purpose and meaning

·        A call to reflection and meditation for wholeness and healing

Why are we interested in dreams?

·        Mysterious

·        Spiritual – A Voice is Calling Us Beyond Ourselves

·        Seeking Direction for Our Lives (Psychics)

·        Rational is Not Satisfying – Something is Missing

·        Tri-part Beings in Image of God: Body, Soul, and Spirit

“Indeed God speaks once, or twice, yet no one notices it.  In a dream, a vision of the night, when sound sleep falls on men, while they slumber in their beds, then He opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction, that He may turn man aside from his conduct, and keep man from pride;”  (Job 33: 14-17 NAS).

We can’t cause a dream to happen.  They are a gift from God.  Just as we are fashioned and shaped by God in our mother’s womb, so our dreams are fashioned and shaped by the spiritual element within us.  The mystery of life is revealed to us through dreams and visions.  If we listen and respond, our dreams will lead us to God.

“’And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘that I will pour forth of my spirit upon all mankind; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams . . . and it shall be, that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’” (Acts 2:17, 21 NAS)

We should approach dreams with reverence, gratitude, and love.  Dreams should be honored by writing them down and journaling about them, sketching them, praying about them, and talking to others about them.  We should work with our dreams by using the methods in the following acronym:

D – Dominant Idea (Title of Dream)

R – Relationship of Dream to Your Life (People, Events, Problems)

E – Emotions You Felt in the Dream (Feelings)

A – Attitude You Feel Toward the Dream  (Why do you remember this dream?)

M – Mystery of the Dream, the Question It Poses

S  - Symbols in the Dream – Picture – Must become childlike to understand

    - Significance - Universal Symbols and Personal Symbols

Symbolism:  God created the world and all it contains, and now He speaks to us through nature.  Paul writes, “For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made . . . “ (Rom. 1:20).  David writes, "The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.  Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.  There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard.  Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their utterances to the end of the world."  (Psalm 19:1-4).
